First of all, the best place to view the Grand Prismatic Spring is actually the overlook “behind” the spring. You’ll have to park at the Fairy Falls Trail parking lot and hike the trail to the overlook. The hike takes about 45 minutes round-trip and is easy enough even in flip flops. The spring is really big. Unless you’re viewing it from the overlook, you’re not going to be able to get a nice picture of the entire spring.
I would recommend going early to get a parking spot in either parking lots, just like with any other places in Yellowstone. One peculiar thing we noticed while walking around the boardwalk near the spring were all the hats that had fallen onto the ground from the strong winds that day. There are other spring pools nearby too that you can look at. If you have the time, hike over to Fairy Falls!
