Our Day at Lake Minnewanka
On our trip to Banff, we spent time exploring the Lake Minnewanka Scenic Drive, which gave us the chance to see both Two Jack Lake and Lake Minnewanka itself. From clear turquoise waters to unexpected wildlife encounters, the day was filled with unforgettable views and experiences.
Map of Our Route
Here’s a quick look at the spots we visited along the Lake Minnewanka Scenic Drive:
Two Jack Lake
Walking along the shore of Two Jack Lake was such a peaceful way to start the day. Near the edge, the water was so clear we could see several feet down, and as we looked farther out, it shifted into a greenish turquoise that nearly matched the pine trees surrounding the lake.
Lake Minnewanka Trailhead & Shoreline
We stopped at the trailhead near the docks where boat tours leave, and instead of hopping on a tour, we explored the shoreline. The views were beautiful, with mountains towering in the background. We even came across some friendly ground squirrels darting around who weren’t the least bit shy.
Hike to Stewart Canyon
From the trailhead, we hiked to Stewart Canyon Bridge and back. The trail up to a certain point is paved, but most of the hike up to the bridge is dirt and has elevation changes. The trail wound along the water, offering constant views of the lake. The highlight came on the way back when we spotted bighorn sheep females with their lambs, a true Banff moment.
Quick Impressions
Everything was jaw-dropping beautiful! A good appetizer to the rest of Banff.
Saw bighorn sheep, squirrels, and ground squirrels!
Viewpoints are close to the road so no need to walk far unless you want to hike!
Saw many families with kids. Some even had strollers!
Closing Thoughts
The rest of the scenic drive after Lake Minnewanka wasn’t as eventful, but honestly, it didn’t need to be. Between Two Jack Lake, the Lake Minnewanka shoreline, and Stewart Canyon, this stop gave us everything we hoped for: clear waters, mountain views, and wildlife sightings.
Photo Gallery
We snapped plenty of photos during our visit, capturing both the big views and little details that made the day special.
