Introduction
Moraine Lake was one of the highlights of our Banff adventure even though it’s one the typical touristy spots for ANYONE that visits Banff. My wife and I had seen countless photos of its turquoise waters and dramatic mountain backdrop, and we knew it was a must-see on our trip. What made it even more special was experiencing it together on a crisp, beautiful morning.
Getting there required some planning since the road to Moraine Lake is closed to personal vehicles. We reserved shuttle passes from the Lake Louise park and ride, which was the easiest way to make our visit stress-free. With passes in hand, we were able to relax and enjoy the ride, ready for a full morning of exploring one of the most iconic lakes in the Rockies.

Here’s a look at the spots we visited during our adventure at Moraine Lake:
Rockpile Trail
The Rockpile Trail was our first stop, and it gave us the classic panoramic view of Moraine Lake. The trail itself is short but leads to one of the most photographed views in Canada. When we reached the top, it was packed with people scattered across the rocks, making it tricky to take photos without strangers in the background. With some patience and timing, we managed to get a few shots of just us with the stunning turquoise lake and mountains behind.
While the views are breathtaking, the trail is not ideal for kids since straying off the path could be dangerous. For us, though, it was worth the climb to see the lake from high up.
Cafe and Gift Shop Stop
After taking in the views, we stopped at the cafe near the lake to grab an energy drink and baked goods. The place was packed, with lines of people waiting for hot food and a bustling gift shop where we picked up souvenirs. Even though it was busy, it was nice to refuel and recharge before heading out for more exploring.
Shoreline Trail
Next, we hiked the Moraine Lake shoreline trail, which gave us a more peaceful experience compared to the crowded Rockpile. The trail winds along the water with some gentle elevation changes, taking you through brush and trees while giving new perspectives of the lake. We loved that we could walk down to the rocky shoreline in certain spots. It made for great photo opportunities right at the water’s edge.
At the end of the trail, we were rewarded with a view of rushing rapids where glacial waters feed into the lake. It was a reminder of the wild, untamed beauty of the Rockies and a perfect spot to pause before heading back.

Did not see any wildlife. No bears, no birds, no squirrels. Just humans. Humans everywhere!
The location itself is not easy to get to unless you have a shuttle pass with a shuttle service or came with a tour. There are gates at the beginning of the road to restrict traffic from going up to Moraine Lake!
I wouldn’t recommend children on the Rockpile Trail, but the shoreline trail is doable for kids. Not much else for kids to do.
Closing Thoughts
Moraine Lake was everything we imagined and more. From the iconic Rockpile views to the quieter moments along the shoreline, the experience felt magical and unforgettable. Even with the crowds, we were able to find peaceful moments and enjoy the beauty of the turquoise waters together.
If you plan to visit, book shuttle passes early since personal vehicle access is restricted. Arrive in the morning for the best light and fewer crowds, and leave enough time to explore both the Rockpile and shoreline trails. It’s truly one of Banff’s must-see spots.
