Introduction
The Icefields Parkway is one of the most breathtaking drives in the world, connecting Banff and Jasper through endless mountain views, turquoise lakes, and towering glaciers. My wife and I spent a full day exploring this incredible stretch of road, stopping at some of the most beautiful lakes and glacial viewpoints along the way.
Every stop had something special, from quiet, reflective waters at sunrise to the chilling winds of a glacier. It was one of those days where the scenery constantly made us stop, look around, and realize just how stunning nature can be.
Map of Locations
Here’s a look at the lakes and glacier spots we visited during our Icefields Parkway adventure:
Bow Lake
Bow Lake was our first stop and what a way to start the day. Even early in the morning, the parking lot was filling up, but we were lucky enough to find a spot in the closer lot. The air was crisp and cold, and the sun had just started to rise over the mountains.
The lake was calm and still, reflecting the surrounding peaks perfectly like a mirror. It was one of those peaceful moments where everything just felt still and serene. Off in the distance, we could see a small waterfall on the far side of the lake, adding even more beauty to the scene.
The trails leading to the shoreline were short and easy, though made of dirt and gravel. We spent some time soaking it all in before continuing our journey north. Bow Lake quickly became one of our favorite stops along the Icefields Parkway.
Peyto Lake
Our next stop was Peyto Lake, one of the most famous lakes along the Icefields Parkway — and for good reason. There are two parking lots here: one for accessibility and another main lot at the bottom where the trail begins.
From the main parking area, the paved trail climbs steadily uphill toward the viewpoint. It was a bit of a workout, but the view at the top was absolutely worth it. The lake below shimmered in shades of turquoise, shaped like a fox’s head when viewed from above.
Even with the crowds, the view was breathtaking. The mountain peaks framing the lake made it look straight out of a postcard.
Athabasca Glacier & Columbia Icefield Skywalk
Our next major stop was at the Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre, where we took the shuttle to the Columbia Icefield Skywalk. While it was interesting to walk out on a glass bridge suspended over the valley, the experience itself was not as impressive as we had hoped, especially considering the price. The views were nice, with a clear look down into the valley where waterfalls and a river ran below, but overall, it felt more like a novelty stop.
After returning from the Skywalk, we drove over and hiked toward the Athabasca Glacier. The wind picked up quickly, and the temperature dropped, so we thankfully we were in jackets and pants before starting the climb. The trail was rocky, steep, and longer than expected, making it one of the more strenuous hikes of our trip.
We saw a few families attempting the trail, and it definitely looked challenging for those with small children. The glacier itself was massive and impressive up close, though you cannot go beyond the rope barriers for safety reasons. It was surreal standing near something so ancient, realizing how much it has receded over time.
Quick Impressions
From calm lakes to icy glaciers, every stop offered a different kind of beauty that showcased the best of the Canadian Rockies.
We didn’t see any wildlife. Other people said they saw mountain goats near the Skywalk but we didn’t see any when we were there.
Popular stops like Peyto Lake and the Skywalk were busy, while Bow Lake felt more peaceful early in the morning.
Most stops have clear trails and paved paths, but some climbs can be steep or uneven.
Some trails are accessible, but hikes like the glacier are better suited for adults or older kids.
Closing Thoughts
The lakes and glaciers along the Icefields Parkway showed us some of the most spectacular scenery we have ever seen. From the peaceful sunrise at Bow Lake to the chilly winds at Athabasca Glacier, every stop was unforgettable in its own way.
If you are planning this route, start early, bring layers, and plan your stops ahead of time. Some areas get crowded quickly, but the views are worth every moment. It is a journey that truly captures the essence of the Rockies: serene, powerful, and endlessly beautiful.
