Seattle – A Trip With The Youngest Brother

by Bryan Lor

Trip Date: September 15th – 18th, 2016

So why Seattle, Washington?  Why not Austin, Texas, or New York City?  Well, my youngest brother wanted to come to Seattle to checkout the city and what it had to offer, so I made a promise to him earlier this year to take him there.  Now, promise fulfilled and another adventure in the books!  It was a pretty chill time with my youngest brother in Seattle.  He brought along some of his school work too so that kept him busy while we were in for the night, but during the day we were out exploring the city.

We stayed at the Swedish Suites by Barsala, which were just condos in the First Hill district.  Surprisingly, the condo was centrally located, so even if we didn’t have a car, it was easy enough to get to downtown and Pike Place Market, or Capitol Hill.  The condo was very clean and modern.  The management company, Barsala, was very accommodating and made the check-in process very easy.  We rented a car too so having a 24 hour parking ramp not even a block away was very convenient for moving about around the city.  Speaking of the rental car, I will never rent a Chevy Cruze again.

The Enterprise customer service was very good.  They were very professional and tried to make the pick-up process go as smoothly as possible.  But the car?  It sucked.  One of the worst cars I’ve ever driven.  The Chevy Cruze has an autostop function that you can’t turn off.  What is autostop?  Autostop turns off the engine when the car goes down to zero RPM while the car is still in drive.  (Think: when you’re stopped at a stop sign or traffic lights.) The car will then start up the engine again when you let off the brake to let the car coast or push down on the gas pedal.  The handling on the Chevy Cruze was okay, but not the best.  Definitely made for some rough driving up and down the winding mountain roads.  The seats were uncomfortable for anything over an hour of sitting.  The one good thing I liked about the Cruze was the power steering.  It certainly made getting out of tight spots easier.

Overrall, I enjoyed the trip to Seattle and I think my youngest brother did too.  I would definitely love to go back and hopefully get a chance to go to the North Cascades and Olympic National Park.
