One of the stops along the way to Yellowstone was Devils Tower National Monument, the first national monument in the country! This stop was the start of our 2nd day of traveling as we made our way towards Yellowstone. The goal this day was to get to Yellowstone by 3 or 4 PM to check-in at the campgrounds, so we left our hotel in Rapid City before the sun was up to get to Devils Tower just in time for the sunrise. This would then give us most of the morning and after to get to Yellowstone!
A few interesting things we noticed while on our way here and at the monument:
- There were a lot of deer out in the fields. Most of them were doe with fawns.
- It was very hazy on the drive there. There were some clouds in the sky but there was this smoky, gray haze that blanketed most of the sky. When we got there however, I think it may have been raining beforehand because the roads were wet and the sky was as blue as the ocean. You’ll see in some of the photos of what I mean.
- There were cloth bundles that were tied around the trees while we were walking on the trail to get a good view of the towering structure. These cloth bundles, as we came to learn more about them, were actually prayer bundles and cloths usually left by Native Americans.
