The Trip
Fall colors in the Midwest are a sight to behold, and the North Shore is a prime destination to witness this natural spectacle. We embarked on a weekend getaway, starting in Duluth and venturing north to the Canadian border. Our itinerary included a scenic drive along the shore, a visit to Lutsen Mountains, and a hike to High Falls at Grand Portage State Park.
Lutsen Mountains
We learned the hard way that arriving early is essential for riding the gondola at Lutsen Mountains during peak fall colors. Despite purchasing tickets online, we still faced a long wait at the ticket counter. However, once we were on the gondola, the breathtaking views made the wait worthwhile. My daughter, a thrill-seeker, loved the experience and wasn’t afraid to soak in the scenery.
Up at the Summit Chalet, we grabbed some lunch before walking around and taking photos of the Fall colors. There are plenty of areas to walk around and get different views from around the chalet.
By the time we were going to leave, there was a long line to get back on the gondola. So if you plan to spend some time at the summit, come early and make sure you’re in line before it’s closing time!
Grand Portage State Park
Our next stop was Grand Portage State Park, where we hiked to High Falls. The falls are accessible via a paved path, making it easy to explore with a stroller. For those seeking more adventure, there are additional trails that offer stunning river views.
High Falls
As you get towards the end of the paved path, you’ll eventually come into view of High Falls. There are a couple of viewing platforms, but to get up to them you will have to climb stairs.
After viewing the falls, we explored one of the dirt paths that lead us down to the river shore with beautiful views of nature on both sides of the US and Canada!
The North Shore in autumn was a feast for the eyes. The vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows painted the landscape in a stunning array of colors. It was the perfect escape to reconnect with nature. We’ll likely do it again next year and maybe the year after that too. Who knows, maybe it’ll be our family’s annual Fall trip?!
