The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone!

Yes, there really is a “Grand Canyon” in Yellowstone.  There are multiple areas to view the canyon and the falls on both sides of the river.  This area is also what inspired the painting, The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, by Thomas Moran in 1872.  The painting along with other paintings at that time of Yellowstone are credited with creating and protecting the park.

It had been raining and storming all morning so we weren’t able to spot any wildlife in Hayden Valley beforehand.  Instead of waiting around until the storms cleared up, we decided to drive a bit north to the canyon area and explore the overlooks while there weren’t a lot of people.  Great views! Definitely would recommend to everyone.  There are trails but to get to the viewing areas, you don’t have to walk far.  After awhile we noticed that more and more people were starting to fill up the parking lots, so if there are spots you want to explore in peace with very little crowds, go super early!
